9th Global Water Partnership (GWP) Consulting Partners Annual Meeting, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 11-12 June 2004. During this meeting, a number of networking activities and establishing links took place such as:

Meeting with Dr. Shahrizaila Abdullah and Dr. Salmah, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 12 June 2004, discussing contour lines for cooperation/collaboration between EWP and MyWP.  Among which are IWRM capacity building programmes where exchange of resources persons is a possibility, wastewater treatment, and information exchange.

Meeting with Dr. Kees Leendertse, Cap-Net, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 12 June 2004, where the possibility of establishing the Egyptian Cap-Net was discussed. Also the forthcoming capacity building activities organized by Cap-Net were explored for potential involvement of the EWP.

Meeting with Ms. Attie J. Kuiken, Project Officer, Netherlands Water Partnership, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 14 June 2004. (Means of cooperation and support of NWP to EWP were discussed).

Meeting with Mr. Munguti Katui-Katua, Kenyan Water Partnership (which is a newly established Country Water Partnership), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 14 June 2004, where it was agreed to initiate bilateral cooperation between the EWP and KWP (maybe in capacity building), and to promote partnerships among the CWP’s of the Nile Basin.

On the occasion of the World Water Day, 22 March, the EWP in cooperation with LIFE Prgramme of the UNDP, and local NGOs held workshops and local actions in 19 Governorates of Egypt in parallel. Each workshop was accompanied by an awareness campaign.  Awareness materials developed by the EWP, MWRI, and the Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE) were distributed during the workshops. Following each workshop a clean-up local action of water resources in a pilot area was implemented.

Following the workshop, the local action started by selecting four locations in Quesna, where the EWP, Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, and NGOs joined forces and cleaned the canals in these areas. The local authority of the Munofeya Governorate then provided its equipment for the removal of the wastes (solid wastes) picked up from the canals.  Awareness signs were launched at these four locations.  Development of a mechanism for solid waste collection at these locations was implemented.

A kick-off workshop for the local action was held at “El-Araby Engineering Company” in Mubarak Industrial City, Qowesna, February 22nd 2004. There was extensive media coverage of the event, and the recommendations of the workshop were also published in a large number of newspapers and magazines.
